Wine Shipping Packaging Guidelines

Wine Shipping Packaging Guidelines & Testing Protocol

Introduction

Shipping wine requires specialized packaging solutions designed to protect fragile glass bottles throughout the shipping process. Globeways packaging guidelines, combined with ISTA-based testing protocols, ensure that shipments arrive intact, compliant, and ready for delivery.

1. Packaging Requirements for Wine Shipments

1.1. Packaging Materials and Construction

Corrugated Containers: Use high-quality, double-wall corrugated cardboard boxes designed specifically for shipping wine. These boxes provide the structural integrity necessary to withstand stacking, compression, and handling stresses during transit.

Molded Pulp and Die-Cut Partitions: Bottles must be individually cushioned and immobilized within the carton using molded pulp inserts, die-cut partitions, or foam packaging. These materials reduce movement, absorb shocks, and prevent bottle-to-bottle contact.

Pre-Molded Polystyrene Shippers: Approved pre-molded polystyrene shippers are acceptable alternatives, provided they fully envelop the bottles and maintain secure positioning inside the outer carton.

Void Fill: Avoid loose-fill materials such as packing peanuts or bubble wrap alone, as they do not prevent shifting. All voids must be filled with stable materials that keep bottles firmly in place.

1.2. Packaging Design Considerations

Secure Sealing: Boxes must be sealed securely with pressure-sensitive tape in an “H” pattern across all flaps and edges to prevent accidental opening during transport.

Weight Limitations: Individual packages should comply with designated weight guidelines to ensure safe manual handling.

Labeling: Clearly mark all shipments with appropriate labels.

2. ISTA-Based Testing and Compliance

2.1. Importance of Testing

Globeway recognizes the importance of packaging testing aligned with ISTA standards, particularly ISTA 3A, which simulates real-world shipping hazards such as drops, vibration, and compression. Testing verifies the packaging’s protective performance, reducing damage risk and facilitating claims processing.

2.2. Globeway Packaging Lab Testing

Globeway offers complimentary package testing services for active account holders. Shippers may submit sample packaging for testing against Globeway-specific protocols modeled on ISTA standards.

Testing simulates shipping conditions including multi-angle drops, vibration cycles, and load compression.

Results include detailed performance reports, highlighting any failure points and recommended improvements.

2.3. Certification and Claims

While formal ISTA certification is not mandatory for all shipments, packaging tested and verified by Globeways lab significantly improves the likelihood of claim approval in case of damage.

Shippers are encouraged to maintain test documentation as part of their compliance records.

3. Operational Best Practices

3.1. Packaging Preparation

Assemble packaging in a clean, controlled environment to avoid contamination.

Use appropriate cushioning materials to surround each bottle with at least 6 cm (2.5 inches) of protective padding from the box walls.

Confirm the stability of packaging by gently shaking the box—no movement of bottles should be detected.

3.2. Handling and Labeling

Attach shipping labels on the top surface for easy scanning and identification.

Include commercial or pro forma invoices inside the shipment.

Apply all regulatory stickers and handling instructions clearly and legibly.

3.3. Thermal and Environmental Protection

For temperature-sensitive shipments, use thermal liners, phase change materials, or gel packs as needed to maintain product integrity during transit.

Avoid shipping during extreme weather conditions if possible.

4. Regulatory Compliance and Restrictions

Shippers must comply with all applicable local, national, and international regulations governing alcohol transport.
