Wine Samples Export Guide

Exporting Wine Samples: The Essential 2025 Guide

In a marketplace shaped by shifting global demand, trade dynamics, and climate considerations, strong logistics are no longer a competitive advantage — they’re essential.

Exporting wine is far more complex than shipping ordinary goods. The combination of fragility, temperature sensitivity, and complex customs requirements means successful exportation depends on a logistics partner with precision, reliability, and global expertise.

Shipping wine internationally without compromising its integrity requires meticulous temperature control and careful handling. A premium Shiraz exposed to excessive heat may develop “cooked” flavours, while delicate Rieslings can lose their aromatic character or even re-ferment during transit.

Temperature Control — The Invisible Threat

Diverse climates make temperature regulation one of the greatest challenges in wine export logistics. Even small fluctuations can degrade wine quality, altering flavour and aroma long before it reaches the consumer.

Globeway offers a full suite of temperature-controlled shipping solutions, supported by:

End-to-end cold chain logistics for reliable delivery

Specialised packaging tailored for temperature-sensitive goods

Real-time temperature monitoring and controlled warehousing

These systems ensure your product arrives in peak condition — every time.

Protecting Fragile Cargo

Wine bottles are inherently delicate. The journey from vineyard to consumer exposes them to vibration, compression, and handling risk. A single breakage can result not only in lost product but also brand damage and customer dissatisfaction.

To safeguard shipments, ensure packaging complies with international transport standards. This includes:

ISPM-15–accredited pallets for compliant global shipping

Protective crating, shrink-wrapping, and double-boxing

Ample internal protection — dividers, padding, and void fill

Professional packaging isn’t just about preventing breakage — it’s about preserving brand integrity across borders.

Regulations and Compliance

Wine exports are governed by a complex network of customs, excise, and labelling regulations, each varying by destination. Compliance failures can lead to fines, confiscations, or rejected shipments.

Country-Specific Regulations

United States:

The U.S. remains a major market, receiving 16.3% of Australian wine exports in 2024 (valued at A$356.3 million). Exports are regulated by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), alongside numerous state and municipal laws.

United Kingdom:

The Australia–UK Free Trade Agreement (A-UKFTA), effective since 2023, eliminated all tariffs on Australian wine exports. This has driven growth in UK-bound shipments, now representing 16.1% of total exports, up from 13.9% in 2018.

Hong Kong:

With zero tariffs on wine and the Australia–Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement (A-HKFTA) ensuring continued free trade, Hong Kong accounted for 12.6% of total exports in 2024. Oversight falls under the Centre for Food Safety (CFS).

Labelling, Additives & Composition

Accurate and compliant labelling is crucial. Exporters must declare:

Alcohol content

Permitted additives

Residual sugar levels

Producer and origin details

Health or safety warnings (where required)

In the U.S., for example, red wines may contain no more than 0.14 g of volatile acidity per 100 ml, and classifications such as table wine (?14% ABV) and dessert wine (>14% but <24% ABV) are strictly defined.

Additionally, Geographical Indications (GIs) — verifying that grapes originate from specific regions — are tightly regulated to preserve authenticity. Always obtain specialist regulatory advice before export to ensure full compliance.

Excise Duties & Taxes

Taxes can make or break profitability. Import duties, excise, and VAT/GST obligations vary widely across markets and depend on the type, volume, and alcohol content of the wine. Failure to account for these costs often results in delays and unexpected expenses.

Simplify with Delivered Duty Paid Services

With Delivered Duty Paid (DTP/DDP) solutions, you can eliminate the complexity of managing duties and taxes.
